Boring is Best.
Hey everyone! Jamie here, founder of PE Buddy. I have been Head of PE in two schools and LOVED it. However, my philosophy at both schools was this: boring is best. Now, if you've seen the hilarious movie "Hitman's Bodyguard," you'll know that this simply means that sometimes the best things are just simple things done well. While fancy new programs and trending pedagogy look good, here is what I focused on to build a rock-solid foundation to build on:
Nailing a vision and mission. What is the long-term goal? How can we engage every category of students, not just the sporty ones? How can we teach stuff that will impact students for life? Without this "why", we are just ticking boxes
Nailing documentation: scope and sequences, unit plans, lesson plans and assessments. Without this, teachers are guessing and not actually aligning with the curriculum
Collaborating with EVERYONE: before making any big decisions, consult with staff, leadership, students and even parents! This is key for buy-in, contextual relevance and overall impact!
Now this stuff really is boring! But, without it, teachers are teaching random things with no foundation and no direction, hoping that it will stick. Our job as PE leaders is to provide a rock-solid foundation that will outlast our tenure at the school AND inspire long-term direction, engagement and impact for all parties involved.
